See Lisbon from a Jewish perspective! 3.5 hours, Rated: moderate walk

Join us as we explore the major sights of downtown Lisbon. Along the way discover the amazing story of Marranos (Crypto-Jews), a distinctive Sephardi sub-group in Portugal who survived over 400 years of persecution in secret.

At the site of the Inquisitors Palace we reveal stories of famous Portuguese Jews who have contributed to the arts, sciences and politics of the world. In the Chiado neighborhood, the most important Jewish artifacts in Portugal are hidden in the most unexpected places. In Praça do Comércio learn about Portugal’s own Oskar Schindler, who defied state orders to save thousands of Jews during the second world war.

There are documents of the Jewish people residing in Lisbon as early as 482 CE. However, historians and archeologists attest to a Jewish presence in Portugal that dates to the time of King Solomon. Before and during the Age of Discovery, the Jews of Portugal held social and political ranks with the favor of kings, and conciliatory relations between Muslims and Christians alike.

These periods were equally marked by inquisitions, forced baptisms and brutal massacres.Major highlights on this walking tour:The Jewish Quarters Grande and Pequeno, Estaus Palace- tribunal of the Inquisition, Rossio Square- memorial to the massacres of 1506, Carmo Ruins. Plus, much more.

Guest Review:
“An Eye-Opening Enlightening and Moving Touring Experience”
We spent two of the most memorable days touring Lisbon with Paolo Scheffer of Lisbon Explorer. The depth of knowledge this guide was able to share with us in a lucid and exciting manner is unmatched by tour guides we have been with previously. We came away from our two days with a new understanding of the history and geography of Lisbon and its environs. We laughed or we cried as Paolo walked us through thousands of years of peaks and troughs in the very complicated relationship of the rulers with the subjects.

Paolo is extremely knowledgeable as well on the intricacies of the long history of Portugal's inquisition against anyone not willing to accept Christianity. A day or two with Paolo will transform you into a more tolerant and compassionate human being. Don't miss this opportunity!

Vita

We are a network of scholars, official authorized guides and specialists in their fields who work, research and teach in Portugal, with shared sensibilities for slow travel. Our diverse staff possess backgrounds in history, archeology, the classics, and some are Portugal’s top rated tour guides. We are not part-time artists, students or actors who memorize scripts, giving free tours to large groups who drop-in without advance reservations. The information we provide is accurate and your questions are answered with the depth of knowledge that comes from historians.

As a matter of fair practice, Lisbon Explorer has a very strict policy of not allowing our staff to engage in accepting commissions from restaurants and shops. We will never divert our guests into a souvenir shop, or restaurant where they feel obligated to buy something.
