Ragogna by Tagliamento River Battlefields on Italian and Austrian mountain peaks Freikofel ascent_1 Photo ACTM Freikofel ascent_ Photo ACTM Freikofel Trenches Photo ACTM Isonzo River from Mount Sabotino Photo ACTM Redipuglia

You will walk on the ridge of the mountains to discover trenches, observation towers, tunnels, bunkers, artillery locations, machine guns and rifles; on the summits you will appreciate the incredible closeness between the two opposing lines of defence, situated only a few hundred meters from each other, in some cases only tens of meters.

You'll learn about the history of women who become heroines of history: the Carnic Bearers (Portatrici Carniche), who continually risked their lives, in order to guarantee the communications between trenches and front lines, sneaking in with food and ammunition for the fighters.

We have designed an itinerary which starts from the plains and gentle hills around Ragogna on the Tagliamento River and carries on the next day with a full day trekking experience on one of three open air battlefields in the mountainous "Carnia Zone" on the border with Austria. The next day you will be on the borders between Italy and Slovenia, before returning home.

An historical expert of World War I will be with us at all times.

This area is so rich in "War locations" that we could not fit them all in, in a short weekend.  We have mentioned just a few areas, but if yo have a particular interest in WWI battlefield areas, you could easily spend one week or even ten days in this area.

Likewise, if you have a special location dear to your heart because maybe one of your ancestors fought in Friuli or Veneto, feel welcome to give us the details and we will work out an itinerary based on your indications and wishes.
